ORIGIN HISTORY:
Although Hawaii produces only a small fraction of the world's coffee, it has earned an international reputation for quality thanks to its unique growing conditions and careful cultivation. Beyond the famous Kona region, Maui has quietly become one of the state's most exciting coffee-growing areas. Nestled along the slopes of the West Maui Mountains, Kaʻanapali Estate benefits from warm tropical days, cooling trade winds, volcanic soils, and fresh mountain water—conditions that encourage slow cherry development and exceptional cup quality.
Among the estate's signature varieties is Yellow Caturra, a rare mutation of Caturra that ripens bright yellow instead of red. While widely recognized in Hawaii, it remains relatively uncommon in coffee-producing regions around the world, making it a unique offering for specialty coffee enthusiasts.
FARM PROCESS:
This coffee was grown at MauiGrown Coffee's Kaʻanapali Estate, a roughly 500-acre farm located above the historic town of Lahaina on the western side of Maui. Originally established as part of efforts to diversify the island's former sugar plantations, the estate has spent decades refining which coffee varieties thrive best in Maui's distinctive climate.
Fully ripe Yellow Caturra cherries are selectively harvested before being naturally processed. Rather than removing the fruit immediately after harvest, the cherries are dried intact, allowing sugars from the fruit to slowly influence the seed throughout the drying process. The result is a coffee that maintains remarkable cleanliness while developing additional sweetness, body, and complexity. Every lot is carefully milled, sorted, and graded at the estate before export to preserve its exceptional quality.
CUP PROFILE:
Bright and refined, this Hawaiian natural offers delicate floral aromatics followed by lively citrus notes and a silky, smooth body. The natural process contributes subtle fruit sweetness while maintaining an impressively clean finish, creating a cup that feels elegant, balanced, and distinctly Hawaiian.
