ORIGIN HISTORY:
Coffee has deep roots in Ghana’s Volta Region, where Canephora coffee has grown in the mountainous landscape since the 1930s. Long before specialty coffee became a global movement, farmers in communities like Leklebi cultivated coffee beneath the shade of cacao trees, plantains, and native forest cover using traditional farming methods closely tied to the land.

Today, Ghana remains one of the most overlooked coffee origins in the specialty world, with only a small amount of its production reaching international roasters. Coffees from the Volta Region offer a distinctly different expression of Canephora, one shaped by rich tropical soil, rainforest microclimates, and generations of smallholder farming knowledge.

FARM PROCESS:
This specialty-grade Canephora was produced by smallholder farmers in Leklebi and sourced through Kawa Moka, a social enterprise founded by Emi-Beth Quantson focused on bringing Ghanaian specialty coffee to the global market. What began as a small group of women farmers has grown into a network supporting more than 100 female producers across hundreds of small farms throughout the region.

Cherries are handpicked during the annual harvest season before being carefully sorted and sun-dried whole on raised African beds for several weeks. This natural drying process preserves the coffee’s bold structure while developing deeper sweetness and complexity in the cup.

CUP PROFILE:
Expect a rich, full-bodied cup with deep chocolate sweetness, roasted hazelnut character, and subtle dried fruit undertones. The texture is heavy and syrupy with low acidity and lingering cocoa depth, showcasing a refined expression of specialty Canephora that is both bold and remarkably balanced.
