Bolivia – Pablo Yana
High Altitude Growth | Microlot | Great for Espresso
Coffee in Bolivia has a long history shaped by resilience and elevation. Introduced in the late 19th century, coffee cultivation found its home in the high Andean valleys, where volcanic soil, misty forest canopies, and dramatic altitude provide everything needed for exceptional Arabica. Yet unlike larger producing nations, Bolivia’s coffee sector has always relied on smallholder families farming steep, remote plots. Limited infrastructure, high labor demands, and evolving market access have meant that Bolivian coffee remains rare, but also uniquely handcrafted and remarkably distinctive. In recent years, a passionate push toward quality has propelled Bolivia into the spotlight for exquisite microlots and innovative producers.
One of those producers is Pablo Yana, who farms in the lush mountains of Caranavi’s Colonia San Ignacio, more than 5,200 feet above sea level. Coffee is not just a crop for Pablo, it is his family’s legacy and livelihood. Their farming practices, while not formally certified, are rooted in organic principles and a deep respect for the land. Pablo’s commitment to quality first drew international attention in 2007, when he and two neighbors earned 19th place in the Bolivia Cup of Excellence, a milestone that ignited his ongoing pursuit of excellence. Today, coffee is a joyful family effort: his children join in the harvest, climbing trees to pick ripe cherries by hand, learning the craft through tradition and laughter. With each passing season, the Yana family continues to refine their process, producing coffees that become richer, more expressive, and more representative of Bolivia’s extraordinary potential.
